The
Construction Process
The
design of an animal is conceived, sketched, erased, modified, and
finally settled upon. Then the kiln-dried basswood lumber in varying
lengths and widths is glued together and blocked up. Chisels and
gouges are sharpened repeatedly throughout the 200+ hours of carving.
Once the figure is carved and finish-sanded, plans for colors and
shading are finalized. The basswood soaks up the oil-based stains,
and the deep-down colors resist chipping. Multiple coats of polyurethane
are brushed on for a long lasting, tough finish. The short story
The Birth of the Carousel gives
more details about the construction process.
